Fifth graders are, indeed, skillful readers! A strong foundation of reading has been set in third and fourth grades and now they are ready to state opinions, support ideas, and present their thoughts to others. Fifth grade is a magical year of exploring new ideas and building on an inquisitive mind as they prepare to move up to the big world of middle school!
Building Background Knowledge
Providing authentic purposes and continuing to build background knowledge for reading is something we strive to do for our literacy students. Here students are preparing their Boston Tea Party Reader's Theatre scripts to present to each other.
Text-based Questions
5th graders learn to support their answers with evidence from the text. Strong literacy skills translate to strong writing skills, which will prove useful all the way through college.
Context Clues
Teaching the skill of figuring out the meaning of new words by using context clues is vitally important as students approach more complex text as they progress through the grade levels. Our Literacy Team approached this essential skill with a 'Con- TEXT' activity where students read text messages with embedded difficult vocabulary that they had to figure out. Mission accomplished!
